The attractive, love-lit Overture to Berlioz’s late Shakespearean comedy Beatrice and Benedict provides the perfect appetiser for Franck’s mighty Symphonic Variations, a work of challenging virtuosic demands for both soloist – 2012 RDS Music Bursary recipient Máire Carroll – and conductor: the Malaysian Philharmonic’s rising star Ciarán McAuley. Ravel’s charming and colourful ballet Mother Goose brings an array of fairy-tale characters vividly to life.
